Seminar Spotlight - Geology

Geology are delight to welcome Prof Frits Hilgen of Utrecht University to deliver the Visiting Professor Award Seminar this term as part of the Geology Seminar Series.

Prof Hilgen will deliver a seminar titled: Milankovitch cycles: Building our time scale, understanding climate change and feedback to astronomy

"The influence of Earth’s orbital (eccentricity) and inclination (precession and obliquity) cycles on climate through changes in insolation has been well demonstrated in the stratigraphic record and the associated astronomical theory of climate change is widely accepted. This persuasive natural climate forcing has been equally held responsible for Quaternary ice ages, Eocene hyperthermals, Cretaceous black shales, and Paleozoic cyclothems.

In this talk, we will look at:

1) how we can reconstruct this forcing by using climate proxy and modeling studies,

2) how we can use these cycles to improve our standard geological time scale and what the implications might be for formal chronostratigraphy with the addition of astro-unit-stratotypes and -chronozones, and

3) how we can provide critical feedback to astronomers about the history of the Solar and Earth-Moon systems."

We hope you will join us at 3pm on Friday 4th October in M4 Theatre in the Museum Building, Main Campus.
